What the fuck is wrong with this. Seriously. Keep in mind, this is the country's national(ized) magazine, the same one they've been using since Stalin took over. My favorite two parts are the title (so happy!) and the forum link at the bottom. Added: Third favorite part (at least at time of viewing): The news feed talking about a war erupting in the Congo.

Also a wtf article: english.pravda.ru/world/americas/19-05-2008/105255-famine-0I can tell you, as a history major, that there is a lot more real evidence this article gives arguing against the article than for. Yes, the government did destroy food (a program that ended very quickly--look up the Agricultural Adjustment Administration), yes, people were evicted, but if anyone's seen anything about the Great Depression and farming, they should know about the second at least. Also, when did the movie "King Kong" made in the 21st century become a definite, reliable source for history? I can't figure out the taxes information on PWA workers. From what I've read, heard, looked up, etc., I haven't found anything at all about 83-84% taxes on a specific job. And on that note, I didn't realize that the mountains of Tennessee counted as "malarial swamps." And even with the conditions described, there is a difference from the Gulag: the Gulag was a prison system, in which political rivals of Stalin and the rest of his administration were sent to Siberia, etc. to work without any say in the matter. The PWA was a job people signed up for. I even love the part where the author says that "modern day patriotic Russian historians reject methods of research based on the general estimation of demographic losses" right after saying that the entire article was based around this principle. Either way, however, the point is moot, as I have not found any other recognition of an event called "The American Famine"...it's simply a part of the Great Depression. /rant against Pravda
